Spring Is Here, Dress Like It!

Spring is here my dear fellow teachers, please let the great change in season reflect in your dress. No more dreary black and gray, no more sweaters layered with more sweaters, and please throw out those sensible shoes that guarantee you will not be slipping in the snow.

For the Ladies:

 For the Gents:
The colors, the simplicity, the crispness, and the lack of layers. If you can't catch the attention of your students while standing at the front of the room looking like this nothing ever will. Nothing.

To Teach and To Play

Seriously my closet mantra is, "Just because I teach does, does not mean I have to give up my closet". It could help that I generate towards the 1940's secretary style anyways, but I love a little Rock n' Roll and that love always seems to creep it's way into my outfits- no matter where I'm headed.

This outfit has the 1940's cover everything up agenda along with the curvy fit, but the textures and colors are all late 1960's early 1970's . . . perfect, for when I'm teaching and for when I'm playing!

It's Been THAT Kind of Week . . .

On Sunday me and two other female friends moved the majority of my apartment that I shared with a squirrel and faulty dishwasher into a well lit, much cheaper dwelling that posses its own washer and dryer (be jealous New Yorkers). Unfortunately we didn't move everything, which has made for a very busy week.

So today I usher in a blog trend for those weeks that just fly by, "A Picture a Day"! Instead of a big long blog you only have to read a quick little photo summing up all that I would say for each day- you know in today's instant gratification world you're secretly excited . . .

Monday
We all feel this way, You are not alone.

Tuesday
Great Advice from a great man.
Wednesday
I think the same thing every, single day.
Thursday

Love the color combination, JCrew was made for teachers, just not priced.
Friday
I L.O.V.E. this movie and so do you.
Have a wonderful weekend, veg on the couch, hang with friends, dance the night away and laugh with those you love!

Looking Good Sir

But what about the guys? Should male teachers just lean on the basics, stick to the same everyday wardrobe? And you know male coaches only ever wear sweats.

Sadly all those cliches and so many more are typical of male teachers, but no longer gentleman . . .

Please, teach me.
This outfit is so simple, so basic, but man do these colors just take everything to a whole other level. I completely understand why male teachers have a repetitive wardrobe and I would never tell them to throw it away and start anew, but I would suggest mixing it up a little.

A different belt, a shirt that actually looks good with your skin color, oh and pants that fit just right. It's the little things that count, the little things.

Walk the Walk

Just a quick question, which shoe do you find more appropriate or more importantly acceptable for a professional:

Jeffery Campbell: The Lita

Walmart: The House Shoe
Another teacher mention that the first beautiful pair of shoes were not maybe appropriate for a teacher, more club shoes. I don't know about you, but there's not a club alive that I would risk ruining those amazing shoes in, but also most clubs these day have dress codes that many business could take note from.

The bottom shoes is a shoe frequently worn by another female teacher and no one has ever ( as far as I know) mentioned anything to her despite the fact that when I think of unprofessional dress I definitely place house shoes at the top of the list.

Which shoe do you think is more teacher appropriate? Maybe neither? Maybe to each their own?

. . . But Don't Get Crazy

As much as I love making sure that my fellow teachers, students and occasionally parents know that I am not willing to sacrifice fashion for anyone ( that includes you newly suspended Netflix) I am also willing to admit when certain fashions don't belong in the classroom
. . . the backwards button up sweater. Yeah, talk about distracting to the lesson!

Now talk about a distraction . . .threadless.com
Next time I'll just wear this t-shirt of a odd looking man wearing a sweater . . . oh the conversation and questions are unimaginable.

The Sweater and Long Skirt Wonder

Every day you wake up as a teacher you may not feel like looking as if you walked out of a magazine or right off the catwalk. Most days you wake up you probably actually question when will pajamas actually become acceptable on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Look she even added some silk sleeve, nice.
Until that happens though have no worries because there is a solution. You still get the comfort, the loose clothing feeling and compliments will flood in from all directions. What is this miracle outfit you ask, but of course the comfy sweater and maxi-skirt combination.

This one is a little more fancy , but still just as comfortable as the rest.

Please note that this lady has on boots, she did not even consider heels.

Great transition from winter to spring or even during early fall, love her sandals.
It's your choice lady, and the way in which you wear this combo goes far beyond the three hear, just remember no P.J.'s- ever!

My fashion forward study buddies what is your go to outfit on a blah day? Which one would you wear? Do you think these would be great to wear from work to play?

What to Wear and What Definitely NOT to Wear

Mom Jeans. Cosby Sweaters. High water Pants. Nurse Shoes. Acid Wash Jeans. A vest full of hand prints.

These mama's are very proud of their jeans.
I own none of these items. Okay maybe one Cosby Sweater, but that was for a themed party because I do have a social life. One of the first speeches they give you during student teaching is how important it is not to look like you stepped of the dance floor into your classroom, their is actually a whole training sections over the subject.

No Cameron, this is not how to dress for a school car wash.
So in return everyone does the extreme and dresses like a soccer mom from the 80's and not to knock the 80's fashion era, but seriously that's just not fair to all the students who have to stare at you for at least 45 minutes a day. You have to find a good in between, an outfit that you feel comfortable in, that with a couple of tweaks you could wear to dinner later (without an apology or disclaimer to your future dinner guest) and that will not make you the talk of the teachers lounge until the end of the school year.
The modern librarian
Start with your basics, remember that if there was ever a profession were no outfit is wasted on not being seen teaching is one, and not matter what dress from the closet that represents you . . . not your mentor teacher, not your mom, not fellow teachers and not the movie Working Girl.

Also, remember there's nothing like a," I love your outfit today, you look great" confidence boost and at the end of a particularly harsh day in the classroom ( think spit wads and write-ups) this could be a nice pick me up.

My fellow study buddies, was transitioning from college to real world hard or easy for you? What advice to do have for transitioning your closet? Have you every encountered a teacher dressed wrong?
